Our Gardening Group had an interesting meeting on Wednesday 28 May 2025 in the afternoon. We started with the Thugs and the Self Seeders, the plants once in a garden that are very difficult to control, and very difficult to remove. There was slightly less enthusiasm for the list of jobs to be done in the garden in June as most of us like to enjoy our gardens rather than work in them during that month. However there was time for a quick video on peas (garden/sugarsnap/mangetout) that can still be sown if we are quick!
We then moved on to the topics of Front Garden Design and Kerbside Appeal. After study the principles put forward in a series of videos, we then went outside for a short walk in our community to put the design lessons into practice. Key issues in front garden design included compatibility with the building architecture, use of symmetry and asymmetry in the design, run-off of rainwater requirements in our locality, colourfulness and security (there seems to be a fashion for obscuring the front door from the pavement with tall trees and shrubs). The security issue could make approaching one’s own front door a concern for some.
Lastly we returned to base for a short video on the clever ways of controlling slugs and snails, and questions about the Apple Ermine Moth (see right) which is attacking many trees here in North West London.
Our next meeting will be on 11 June 2025 for a garden party in one of our members’ homes.
