Our Jazz Group studies Latin America

Our Jazz Appreciation Group met on Tuesday 28 January 2025 with Kevin to listen to an analysis of Latin Jazz, largely the music of Brazil. In particular we heard from João Gilberto, Antônio Carlos Jobim, and the curiously named Baden Powell.

There were interesting back stories to the pieces, and how they came to be so popular and much loved by people the world over. We also learned how Astrud Gilberto came to sing at the recording of “The Girl from Ipanema”. There was even a report of a visit to the café where the song had been written in Ipanema by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes in 1962. English lyrics were written later by Norman Gimbel. One entertaining item that was played by Kevin was the song “O Pato” about a duck that was so happy that its singing led to the attraction of a nearby drake!

There was a discussion on how a Bossa Nova can be considered Jazz – it is more in the performance than the beat.

We finished with a performance by Frank Sinatra and Antônio Carlos Jobim, providing further evidence of the popularity of this style of music.

Our next Jazz Appreciation session will take place on Tuesday 25 February 2025 at 2:00pm.
