Our Creative Writing Group met on Wednesday 24 June 2026 to share another wide range of stories.

We started with a poem highlighting the extensive list of issues that arise when arriving in a new country and leaving the familiar behind. We then travelled back on a historical journey at the time of the Great Fire of London and how a rodent family struggled to survive the fire before the search for another place to call home.

With the smell of smoke still in our nostrils, we had a story about the Durian Fruit in South East Asia which gave us much food for thought and challenged us to see if we could endure the smell. No Durian Fruit were actually at our meeting!

We then had a poem on self discovery and introspection titled “My Untangling”. The end result of self discovery was that there was nothing new to find – only Angels dancing on a pin! We then had the start of a story about a man who is invisible to all those around him. The experience is not reassuring and we are promised that there will be more episodes in the future.

We then moved to China for a history of the Uyghur People there, and their difficulties over the centuries following a religion that in the past was not tolerated or recognised. This led to a short discussion on the fate of the Uyghur people. That was followed by a poem on the Brexit Referendum which had been running some 20 years before the meeting, to the day.

We continued our 18th Century Coaching Inn story set in Yorkshire, and how a new inn set up by the local Duke has had an effect on their trade. They managed to open the trunk and have started to investigate the documents found within it. The theme of property continued with a family returning from a holiday in Crete to find that their home has been sold in their absence without their knowledge, and now they have to start the battle to return the house and evict the current occupant. Our refugee theme continued with the story of a family where the daughter writes the family history down, and the grandfather manages to find a publisher who will take the stories on.
