Our Gardening Group met on Wednesday 25 February 2026, seemingly the first warm and dry day for many weeks, to look into the essential gardening tasks that need to be undertaken if winter truly is on the way out.
We had a long list of jobs provided by the Royal Horticultural Society which included finishing the pruning of roses, planting onions and shallots, and planting summer flowering bulbs. March is also a good time to get dahlia tubers ready for planting out, and getting potatoes chitted and ready for putting in the ground or in pots.
March is also the month for dividing and replanting perennials like rudbeckia, cutting off dead hydrangea flower heads and looking after fences and patios. We were also given a reminder of the safety hazards in the garden and what we can do to stay safe whilst we get the jobs done.
After all that talk of work, we spent time planning the visits we will be making to gardens and nurseries during the warmer summer months.
Our next Gardening Group meeting will be on Wednesday 25 March 2026 at 2pm.
