Current Affairs at a Turning Point

Our Current Affairs Group met on Monday 10 November 2025 to discuss the current situation in the United Kingdom and beyond.

Despite careful preparation for the session, the news of resignations in the BBC the previous evening meant that all the preparation had to be set aside. Turning on a point, members in the group with significant experience in related matters discussed the resignations, what was known about the causes and consequences, and the spin-off effects that may result from them.

The quality of the work of the BBC in the past was compared to the quality today, and consideration was given to the future of the BBC, both in content and in funding. Independence from a variety of influences was also discussed at some length. There is likely much more to come in the next few weeks with further investigations and reports, and the group is almost certain the return to this topic when more details have come to light.

On a lighter note, we discussed the contribution of cartoonists to modern day life before breaking for teas and coffees.

After the break, we discussed the recent concerns expressed in the media with the UK Judicial System and with the Prison Service in particular. We looked into the issues facing the country with reference to the erroneous releases from prisons and how those working in prisons were affected. Our Exploring London Group had visited the Clink Restaurant at Brixton Prison and we had a report on the work of Redemption Roasters who are using coffee bar work to help prevent re-offending. There are clearly many difficulties in running custodial sentences for a wide range of offences, and both the needs of the prison staff and the prisoners were discussed. We will have to wait to find out what happens.

Towards the end of the session, there was a discussion on the COP30 conference taking place in Belém, Brazil. The delegates from the three countries that were not present were mentioned, and we discussed the consequences of those countries being absent for those that were attending.

As usual, when the clock reached noon, the members of the group were still able to leave the discussion as friends! Our next Current Affairs discussion will be on Monday 17 November 2025 at 10:00am.
