Stories on Boating Building & Prison

Our Creative Writers met on Wednesday 05 November 2025 for a session with new stories, and for a rehearsal for their upcoming session at the Monthly Meeting on 26 November 2025.

We started with an interesting piece from a barrister in training make a first visit to a murderer in prison who was trying to convert an indeterminate prison sentence for murder into a commuted sentence after serving thirty eight years in prison. The atmosphere of the piece touched many members as did the details of the case provided. Sadly the prisoner passed away whilst the appeal was being processed, and the experience had left its mark on the young barrister, especially as the appeal was posthumously rejected.

We then had a poem about riding the cable lift down to Alum Bay on the Isle of Wight for a boat ride towards the Needles. The poem beautifully expressed the awe of the ride down, and the sounds of a boat travelling through the Solent with uncanny realism.

We continued the boating theme with an adventure passing through a line squall off Lulworth Cove on the Jurassic Coast, with much technical detail on getting the boat ready for the storm and ensuring that a lightning strike did no damage. After that it was a return to calmer waters for a rowing boat adventure on the River Thames at Windsor complete with an accidental ducking in the river. The experience had been repeated in a horse trough in the centre of town on Christmas Eve with an attempt at tap dancing on thin ice!

We finished with two stories about attempts to modernise houses in suburbia which had resulted in extensive remedial work being required to restore the character of the buildings. With one, there had been an attempt to bury a body in the workings which had been spotted by a nosey neighbour, in the other it was an attempt to bring a little Mediterranean colour to a house without taking account of the other houses in the street. Both of these alterations had been put right in the end.

Our next Creative Writing session will be on 19 November 2025 at 10:00am.
