Hearing the Music of a Time of War

Our Music Unlimited Group met on Tuesday 04 November 2025 to listen to Pete’s selection of the music that was being played during the years 1939-1945, a time that some of our audience remembered.

We enjoyed listening to broadcast recordings featuring Glen Miller with the US Army Airforce Band, and some rarer recordings like It Must Be Jelly and Tail End Charlie. We also had The Trolley Song as performed by the Pied Pipers. That was followed by Gene Krupa, a famous drummer who had his own band at that time.

We then moved on to Stan Kenton (appropriately) with Eager Beaver, and he was followed by a selection from the Andrews Sisters. Then came Harry James, who was followed by Ralph Flanagan and Eric Winstone. After a break for a cup of tea, we resumed with a curiosity from the period by “Charlie” – featuring songs of the period with altered lyrics that were favourable to the Nazis. We closed with the music of Frank Sinatra, Artie Shaw and Count Basie. The British musicians of the time were ably represented by Ted Heath, Billy Cotton and Joe Loss amongst others.

Our next Desert Island Discs will be on 25 November 2025 at 2pm, and our next Music Unlimited will be on 02 December 2025 and will feature Carols from various countries.
