We Started the Miller’s Tale

At our English Literature session on Tuesday 09 September 2025, we continued our reading of a selection of the tales from Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales with the Miller’s Tale.

The Miller is a forthright character who is big, noisy and at this stage of the pilgrimage to Canterbury a little the worse for drink. His inhibitions loosened, he tells the tale of an old carpenter – John – who has married a much younger wife – Allisoun – who is somewhat taken with a young student – Nicholas. That could lead to complications, but those complications are amplified and enhanced by Absolon a young cleric from the local church who envies the progress that Nicholas has made in wooing Allisoun.

There is more to this tale than we could cope with in one session, so it will be continued on Thursday 25 September 2025 at 10:00 am, when everything will be revealed – literally!
